Internet of things - Summer School

The Department of Electronic & Computer Engineering Summer School on the Internet of Things will take place in University of Limerick, Ireland, in July 2017. The summer schools provide a unique opportunity for students to learn about fundamental and state-of-the-art technology and to mingle with Industry Experts.

The 2017 summer school will approach the broad field of the Internet of Things (IoT) by considering sensors, embedded systems, wireless technologies, networks and protocols, distributed computations, ubiquitous computing, interaction in smart environments, and privacy and security concepts. The students will work on one of 7 different projects, each focussing on a different IoT application area. This includes laboratory time for practical experiments with sensor-based devices, which will be provided for each student.

 

 

The Summer School is a two-week introduction to the core technology topics needed to support the Internet of Things.  On completion, the student will be well placed to play a part in this emerging technology ecosystem. At the end of the school, each group will present their concept project and how it relates to the core IoT concepts. 

 

The School comprises a series of morning technical presentations. In the afternoons there will be a series of practical laboratory based IoT projects. The projects will use the Diligent Analog Discovery 2, Arduino, Galileo Intel Quark Application Processor, Android, bluemix, and other relevant IoT support technologies. The school will begin with, and be complemented by a two day industrial seminar from Ireland-based International companies: Analog Devices, Intel, IBM, ESB, Jaguar/Land Rover, Ceva Inc, EpiSensor etc. These companies will examine topics such as Energy Harvesting, Sensors, Business applications, Data Analytics etc.

As a part of the School, each student as part of a team will undertake a relevant IoT project, each team will develop a concept design and a UL mentor will discuss and support each project group (3-4 person project team).  A number of project themes are proposed:

 

1. Tracking application for people, kids, animals etc.

2. Health monitoring for elderly and or athletes.

3.  Utility monitoring

4.  Environmental monitoring

5.  Mobile Medic

6.  Campus IoT Application

7.  Occupancy Monitoring, restaurant, library, car park, lecture room. 

 

Project 1: Tracking Application 

Challenge: To develop a tracking solution to monitor people, children, or animals. Factors that influence include: range of tracking; indoor or outdoor; rural or remote; and the choice of technology. 

 

Project 2: Health Monitoring 

Challenge: IoT has seen an increase in fitness apps and health monitoring devices. The task required here is to monitor athletic or elderly person biometric parameters and the generation of active alarm messages if parameters are outside prescribed limits.

 

Project 3: Utility Monitoring

Challenge Measuring your home’s energy, water or gas consumption is the first step toward finding ways to decrease it. Project is to monitor usage of one or more utilities and display usage.

Project 4: Environmental Monitoring

Challenge: Developing an environmental impacts detection system in real time which lets you measure water quality and other atmospheric parameters, temperature and pressure, dust, carbon dioxide etc.

 

Project 5: Mobile Medic

Challenge: Health care access, affordability, and quality are problems all around the world. Mobile technology offers ways to help with these challenges. Through mobile health applications, sensors, medical devices, and remote patient monitoring. Using mobile phone sensors and camera to provide medical information on patients.

 

Project 6: Campus IoT Application

Challenge: To create a campus app to provide a smart guide to feature and facilities on the campus using Android phone. Features could include tracking, car location etc.

 

Project 7: Occupancy Monitoring

Challenge: Occupancy monitoring can be used in and environment to maximize usage of limited facilities, e.g.. Restaurant, library, car park, lecture room.
